WHAT HAPPENED ONE YEAR AGO THIS WEEK?

             17/03/07 - Alpha Sports 1-0 Brighton Electricity - (League)

Electricity gave their worst performance of the season, going down to whipping boys Alpha Sports who started the day
with only three points and sat bottom of the league. Sports' fifth minute goal was all that seperated the teams at Wish Park,
and in all fairness Electricity never looked like creating any chances as the home side kept their first clean sheet this season.

Kick Out Racism

BRIGHTON ELECTRICITY FOOTBALL CLUB

Brighton Electricity FC

Brighton Electricity FC set the standard in Sussex Football for the Kick it Out - anti racism campaign. The FA Charter Standard award winning club put on the One Game, One Community shirts in their warm up just as many professional clubs will be doing during the week of action this year.

The Club have got strong links with The University of Brighton and have encouraged players from their Afro-Caribbean Society to be part of their set up. The Brighton League Premier Club have had an incredible 7 different African nations represented in their squad which is a massive achievement for a grassroots club. As part of the week of action around the country there are events ranging from football festivals to photography projects to lessons in schools. Professional clubs, football fans, schools, minority groups, local authorites and universities are amongst those who have organised initiatives with the aim of tackling exclusion and celebrating diversity.

This also links to Black History Month.

Brighton Electricity FC have won The FA Charter Standard Sussex FA Award in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and are sponsored by EDF Energy. They offer free football to all players in higher education and have qualified coaches working with the team.

Volunteers in spotlight

The winners of this year's 2006 FA Football Volunteer Workforce Awards were treated to VIP hopsitality at yesterday's FA Community Shield in Cardiff.

Two of the winners were Shaun Rotherham from Winstanley, Wigan, and Daniel Whitehead from Horwich, who were nominated by the Lancashire FA for their voluntary efforts in developing grassroots football in the county.

Shaun Rotherham is a governor at St Aidan’s School and currently coaches three teams at Winstanley Warriors JFC. Over the last 12 months Shaun has achieved The FA Level 2 coaching qualification to ensure best practice in coaching for the children and has also secured sponsorship and grants to enable other parents to obtain their FA qualifications and support the game.

Daniel Whitehead is just 15 years old and has been working with Horwich St Mary’s JFC since the age of seven, playing a key part in the after-school training for the team. He completed a refereeing course two years ago and, he is now looking to get his FA Level 1 coaching qualification as he approaches his 16th birthday next month.

Brian Barwick, Chief Executive of The FA, congratulated all the winners and told TheFA.com: “The development of the leagues and clubs around the country very much depend upon people like Shaun and Daniel who give so much of their time and support.

"Without volunteers, the game at the grassroots level which is enjoyed by millions would struggle and The FA recognises the valuable contribution volunteers make to the game and their local communities."

The future's bright. The future's brown

Tuesday, 18th November 2003.

It was always going to be a day to remember for Brighton Electricity FC.

Not only were they showing off their unique new strip but they had also secured the services of former England star John Scales for the day.

And the defender, who designed the kit himself, set up the first of three goals in a 3-1 win against Grenadier.

The home side, who play in the Brighton League Division One, took delivery of their new strip on Saturday.

In the Eighties, the team modelled their shirts on Coventry City's famous chocolate brown away kit, despite it attracting widespread derision.

Now Brighton Electricity are delighted to be going back to their brown roots.

Team chairman and secretary Trevor Carney, 54, who works for kit sponsor Seeboard Energy, played in the Eighties strip and welcomed its return.

He said: "It's taken years off me. I was 31 when we wore it in the Eighties so it has made me feel much younger."

His son, George, who plays for the current side who are seventh in the league, said: "We're the only team in the country wearing brown. It's unique and we want to be a unique club."

Brighton Electricity had been so eager to turn out in brown they hired John, who cost Liverpool £3.5 million when he signed from Wimbledon in 1994, to track down the fabric.

John, 37, who runs his own kit company, www.besport.com, designed the brown and white kit and found a company in Portugal to supply the fabric.

He then popped down to deliver the finished product to the team in Braypool and dusted off his boots for a kick about.

He said: "Everyone loves this kit. They wanted something different."

John said during his 17-year career he remembered once turning out in a very unpopular yellow kit for Liverpool.

Unlike Coventry, the Brighton lads are proud to wear brown again.

The brown strip was chosen in the Eighties because they were sponsored by an electricity company and brown was the live wire in a plug, earning them the nickname Live Wires.

Des McDonald, who has been with the club for 14 years, said: "The last brown kit was horrible because it was brown with two white stripes down each side of the chest so we also got called the choc ices."

Dave FitzGerald, who also wore the original brown strip, said: "We have to make an impression."

Rival fans questioning Brighton Electricity's style cannot be too smug as even the high flyers have made some fashion faux pas.

Among the worst kits was Norwich City's 1993 effort, described as being "covered in canary droppings".

Even the Albion have floundered in the fashion stakes with their pink away shirt of 1991.

Fans said it looked as if the players had hacked someone to death while wearing a white shirt and then wiped their bloodied hands on their chests.

On The Scales - November

My Comeback!

November 2003

Saturday 15th November is the day of my own Gazza-style football comeback as I turn out for Brighton Electricity FC, of the Brighton First Division, to help launch their new brown kit that Be Sport have just finished making.

Coming out of retirement is a scary think for me. Believe it or not, apart from ten or so games of Beach Soccer, I haven’t played any sort of competitive football since I was at Ipswich, and I don’t even know where my boots are! It should be fun and, of course, I am looking forward to it, but I just hope great things aren’t expected from me.

As for the kit, I think it looks fantastic and really smart, and it will be interesting - to say the least - to go down to Brighton and play in it on Saturday.
